And Yes, A Few More Of #401
Author: MaryMcPherson

Here is another series of photos from this past extended weekend of operations of Southern Railway #401.

1. Prior to the night photo session on Thursday, the locomotive has been moved into position alongside Stair Tower. While the lights are being set up and the photographers are assembling, museum members Tim and Bill converse beside #401.

2. The lights have been turned on as the last daylight fades, and the session is getting underway. This photo was taken around the same time as the photo in another thread started yesterday, from a lower angle.

A final pair of photos taken on Sunday, as #401 crosses the township road heading from the museum grounds to downtown and arrives at the former Wabash depot. The depot was relocated from its original location to its current position alongside the former Illinois Central tracks.

Awesome photos all Mary. Thanks for the great posed scenes with the people in them.
As I was going thru your photos I thought I had fallen in love with the gents at the tower and checking the time but then you continued on with even more great photos.
Again thank you for the step back in time.

Love the final shot of the trainhand sitting on the depot bench watching the 401. That is so old skool real. Brother engine 400 was the legend of my seniority district. Gotta come and sit on a bench and watch 401 roll by someday.

Mary: Photo 6 tears my heart out. I have seen that scene with the smoke going straight up many times on my old T&P. The passenger trains would be stopped or the local freight would be stopped to get switching information. Gosh it takes me back a long long ways.

Thanks for sharing. I have seen the engine in person and she is a gem. And even if she is a Consolidation in a world of Northerns and Berks, she does have some size to her. IMO, the arched window mimics those used by other roads like the Boston & Maine and New Haven (and, I think early Wabash and Monon engines). Which caboose did they put on the rear? Was it one of the Wabash ones?

The charter used a wooden Northern Pacific caboose, while the regular Saturday/Sunday trains used an Illinois Central steam era steel caboose.
