Oregon Coast Scenic Steam
Author: jbwest

Here are few pix that hopefully will not duplicate those already posted. It was a fun weekend. I might add that the track in the first picture is not typical of the OCSR, which is mostly fairly heavy rail with pretty good ballast typical of a former major SP branch. And the telephoto image makes it look worse than it really is (track people hate telephoto lenses!). This section between Garibaldi and Tillamook is not currently used for passenger service.

To protect the natural wood.

The pilot is beautifully crafted yellow oak (like the window frames in the cab). The general consensus seemed to be that it was too "pretty" and that the dark pilot cover would give the pictures a bit more of a work a day ambience. No right or wrong, that was just the choice that was made. Beautifully restored engine and once they got the dynamo replaced to turn the headlight on, it seemed to perform flawlessly, and I heard the crew loved running it.

Great images Jack. Any photos available of the wood pilot unveiled? I agree, great looking steam locomotive

Martin posted a picture of the uncovered pilot at the end of this thread:

Naked wood pilots

Naked wood pilots rang a bell. Here is a unpainted wood pilot in Guatemala back in the day!
