The best part of that ride is the rocking and rollin.... Posted from iPhone Date: 05/23/18 13:37 Re: Question about wye north of Durango Author: callum_out What's that you say? Everyone knows that good track isn't possible over the "bog" South
of Hermosa. Out Date: 05/24/18 04:29 Re: Question about wye north of Durango Author: PlyWoody A few years ago the D&S had a Roadforeman who bragged about the cheap bank-run-gravel he discovered to use on the track in the Meadows south of Hermosa. Bank-run-gravel is like small marble and is easy to handle but it is will not compress to a hard mass and will not dent the bottom of ties and lock up to make a good road bed. The D&S have discovered their mistake and that Roadforeman is long gone but the damage was done. The marbles have been tamped into that roadbed and it will never firm up. Even if you use crushed granite, those marbles will never firm up. The track need to be skidded with a track skid to plow it out by being dragged under the ties of the track and skeletonized the track and then raised on 6" of crushed granite or dolomite. Remember this is the track that made the snake sun kink as it is not locked firm sitting on those ball bearing stone under the ties.

condition on a mysterious "bog" that had formed in the meadow. Out Date: 05/28/18 20:06 Re: Question about wye north of Durango Author: TomPlatten I rode the Silverton back in 1959. The ride to Silverton was rough then but that was because the D&RGW didn't want to spend any money on the ROW. So we just hung on and watched people spill they drinks! Many of us here on TO and the NGDF have been warning the D&SNG, now that I have been on it three times, that there has been no significant improvement in the ride. God help Mr. Harper if he derails one of his trains and people are injured or worse. That will be the end of the story! I realize that tending to the ROW over 45 miles will be expensive but the alternative is not acceptable!
