Steam & Excursion > World's Fair Daylight going homeDate: 06/10/18 14:43 World's Fair Daylight going home Author: burlingtonjohn SP 4449 is arriving in Los Angeles on 17 Jun 1984 with the Portland bound World’s Fair Daylight. I hadn’t seen 4449 since April 1976 when she was on the point of the American Freedom Train in St Louis. Resplendent in the r/w/b of the AFT, I just didn’t see how one locomotive could look any better than that. I must admit, the colors of the Daylight have grown on me, though!
I was stationed about the battleship USS New Jersey in Long Beach. I don’t remember quite how I heard 4449 was going to be in LA (remember campers, this was long before the internet or instant communication, cell phones, etc). I figured out how to navigate my way from Long Beach to Union Station via bus … I do think it was worth the effort. More on that later … Regards, Burlington John Date: 06/10/18 15:17 Re: World's Fair Daylight going home Author: CPRR I was in Chatsworth waiting that day. One of these days I will post it

Great fun. Cool that you for to be a Car Host in that beautiful obs! I was in the "Sonoma" with the wonderful and legendary Gordon Zimmerman, who had done a lot for the 4449 and her people, including being on most trips selling 4449 merchandise, and installing the shower in the :Yes Dear," their crew car, among many other things. Like donating a huge amount of money at the start of the fund-raising for the future Oregon Rail Heritage Center. Those World's Fair Daylight trips were quite memorable. Edited 1 time(s).
