Steam & Excursion > Another Scene That May Certainly Have Changed Over Time!Date: 06/19/18 02:59 Another Scene That May Certainly Have Changed Over Time! Author: LoggerHogger I thought I would post another San Francisco scene from the days of steam to hear folks show how it has changed in the ensuing decades since it was shot.
Here we are in 1945 and Southern Pacific #2441 and her train are crossing the Islais Creek viaduct on a beautiful sunny day. Other than the obvious loss of steam powered passenger trains, we can only imagine how this scene has changed. Or maybe we don't have to imagine the changes. Let's see who can show us the scene today. Martin Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 06/19/18 03:04 by LoggerHogger. Date: 06/19/18 04:29 Re: Another Scene That May Certainly Have Changed Over Time! Author: refarkas What a beautiful image this is! Someone had the eye of an artist to capture this.

Here it is today from Pennsylvania Ave on the other side of the tunnel portal. https://goo.gl/maps/jEQdoQidenw Rotate the map, move it around, and you'll see that you'd be in someone's garden to get the same location. Thanks for posting! Date: 06/19/18 07:45 Re: Another Scene That May Certainly Have Changed Over Time! Author: TonyJ Another fine image. The train is crossing over Army Street (as it was known back then). The tunnel is No. 2 and was the only twin bore one of the five peninsula tunnels. The spur at the right went all the way through the tunnel and at one time ran up an incline between Tunnels #2 and #1 (22nd street station) to reach the Western Pacific. A few hundred feet inside the tunnel was a switch used to access a customer's spur hidden whose building is partially hidden by part of the tunnel.
Fifteen years after the photo Candlestick Park would be built at he left side of the hill with the clouds in the background. The biggest change today is, as the previous photo link shows, is the building of I-280 with the Army Street on ramp on the street next to the tracks.
