A Locomotive Still Putting In A Days Work For Her Original Owner!
Author: LoggerHogger

By September 1960, it was hard to find many steam locomotives still in regular service, let alone still working for their original railroad that had ordered them new from the factory.  One exception clearly was Santa Maria Valley #21.

This Baldwin 2-8-2 was built in 1925 to pull freight trains on the Santa Maria Valley Railroad in Southern California.  She worked well for that line and even as other engines came and went off the line she soldiered one.

In this view #21 brings another train of freight cars from Guadeloupe to Betterveria late in her steam career.

Today #21 is in Astoria, Oregon and is under restoration back to operating condition, maybe in time for her 100th birthday.

I see one of the ex-Frisco wood cupola cabooses a few cars back.  I think they ended up with two of them.  Classic caboose design.
