8444 and a wig-wag on Colorado's Eastern Plains
Author: highgreengraphics

On a pleasant May 10, 1985 afternoon, UP 8444 charges westward on the Julesburg - LaSalle line in northeast Colorado (The route of the City of Denver until Amtrak) through tiny Goodrich, CO past an ancient wig-wag crossing signal. The wig-wag is one of two at this crossing that are the last on this line, which was torn out in the 1990's between the end of BNSF Trackage Rights at Union to Monfort, CO. Now it is hard to even discern where this crossing was..=== === = === JLH

Truly excellent shot and as mentioned, a bit impossible today. That line abandonment was great because
the UP knew they could get trackage riights on the BN-not!

Wow.  What a great shot.  Many things came together to make this shot so terrific--great lighting, beautiful blue sky with clouds, wig wag signal, clean locomotive, no bystanders, and an unusual consist.

Great shot!! However the info on the date has to be wrong as by 1988 the 8444 was in two-tone grey!! My guess is this photo is from around 1982-1986?

>The Julesberg sub got stub ended years ago. The line still exists from Julesburg to Sterling Colorado.
Originally south of Sterling was joint trackage with the BNSF down to Brush where the BNSF headed east and south to Denver on their own tracks. From Brush to LaSalle the former UP trackage has mostly been removed. There is a short segment east out of LaSalle still in place.
So in short the Julesburg sub is only half of what it used to be.

What a COOL shot!!  I do remember those peach basket wig-wags in Colorado back in the 1970's.
