Steam & Excursion > Skookum sees the sun

My 79th birthday was October 18, and seeing the Skookum out in the afternoon sun at Garibaldi was a nice present.  Certainly an unusual engine, an interesting history, and now a future shrouded in mystery.  Where in California is she going?  But at least I can hope to see her running on the OCSR in March.

That last photo is fantastic!

I noticed the cylinders on the Skookum (front vs. rear) are different sizes.  Compound engine?  Is the steam first used in the rear cylinders, then in the front, like the N&W Class Y locomotives?

Yep...Steam goes from the boiler through the throttle valve to the rear high pressure cylinders, the exhaust from these is routed to the low pressure front cylinders. For starting, high pressure steam can be routed to the front cylinders.

Speculating, here....
There’s a chance that Skookum is a simple articulated, and not a compound ( with reduced pressure for starting provided to the front two)

I see cylinders of the same apparent size ( diameter) for each engine...

( See ex-C&O 1309 for a comparison,  it’s a 2-6-6-2, vs. Skookum’s 2-4-4-2)..

I hope that is true, it would be almost in my backyard.  But see this thread:  https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4664914.  Martin says not Roots.

What are the issues which must be resolved regarding the Skokum operation? I read in past posts there were timing problems, but those should be easily resolved. Is there something mechanical?

Martin must have a $$$$ interest in the operation of this locomotive, as it is Top Secret on where she is going next year after operation in OR.  Why in the hell cant we get a answer?

Well, maybe,,,,,,,,just maybe, the actual owner of the locomotives hasn't formally released such information,,,,,,,yet!  Thus, it isn't any of our business.
