4014 front engine installed
Author: howeld

Trains Mag shared some photos on FB of UP 4014 getting some important work done yesterday. Two sidewinders lifting the front to allow front engine to be rolled under it.
Rear drives are still missing as is the cab and most all plumbing.

Just passed 6 months till the big day.

This sure is exciting news! There appears to be a lot of work left to do inside of 6 months and still needs to be test ran, I think they will be cutting it very close.

Congrats to the crew for getting the front engine under 4014. Progress continues.

Heard chatter locally about the 4014 needing to be ready no later than March/April for some runs around the UP. Thus, trials to/from Greeley could start as early as February/March.

And, if there is a May 10th due date, the math starts to work for those timelines. Exciting times.

Shall we lay out odds yet? I will wager $100 if the odds are good enough.

I saw the pictures & a video of the front engine being rolled in to place on FB.
One question I've always wondered about for the steam experts on here.... When you remove the wheels, work on them or the boxes, just how in the heck do you position the wheels back exactly as they are supposed to so the main & connecting rods line up?  The tolerances are incredibly tight & I just can't picture how you get 4 wheels to perfectly line up so the rods slide back on.

I watched the video of Ed telling about it quite well done. But no mention of or picture of the rear one. After looking at the pix it seems the rear is ready for drivers and such. That would be the key at this point as it could be ready and sitting to one side. Anyone on that?

Excellent news. The dream is becoming reality.
Thank you Union Pacific and the Cheyenne team!

My guess is they'll "wheel" the rear via the drop table rather than lift the locomotive.
Cheers, Dave

Correct, Dave. The big 250 ton overhead crane has been long gone out of the Cheyenne Shop, and the drop table arrangement works very well.

Maybe a dumb question, but when it comes time to put the side rods on, how do they get all four driver sets rotated to the correct position?  I noticed that the front drivers are all clocked at random angles to each other.

A little jacking here and there, and each driver pair can be rotated quite easily.

I can see mass quantities of overtime in the future and strangers in the rebuild bay.

There may be more contractors involved than the UP crew already.
