The Saying Describing This Railroad Is Evident In This Scene!
Author: LoggerHogger

Many railroads built in the West were known for being built against all odds when it came to laying tracks in some very remote and, at times, desolate areas of the Country.  One such line was the Carson & Colorado Railroad that ran in some of the most desolate areas of Western Nevada and Eastern California.

In later years she was given the nickname "The Slim Princess" due to her narrow gauge rails that seemed delicate against the huge backdrop that she ran through.  However, perhaps the best description for the line was bestowed on her by one of the founders of the line soon after it was completed.  He looked at the 300 miles of track that they had laid between only a handful of sparse and small settlements and concluded to his fellow investors, "Gentlemen, either we have built this line 300 miles too long, or perhaps we did so 300 years too soon".

As we look at C&C successor, Southern Pacific's 4-6-0 #9 departing it's water stop at Aberdeen, we can certainly see what he meant.

More importantly LADWP obtained water rights through less-than honest dealings that stifled growth in the Owens Valley. In the end maybe inadvertantly saving the valley from runaway urbanization. Like many of the lines constructed during the early 20th century based on unbridled optimism the C&C strugled right from the git go.
