S.P. Red Hardware

Why did the SP paint their brass hardware on steam engines?

Did anyone else do this?

Maybe to get rid of a few jobs.  You always had a painter in the yard or RH.  But you had to have a wiper with brass. Not just one person but a few (kero, spray, wipe, etc.)

A few very important safety appliances were painted red, the ones I can remember include the top of boiler blow-off valve, the check valve, and the emergency steam feed to the main reservoir.
A lot of other appliances were painted black like the injectors.

Does anyone who has been in the military need to ask that question?
When I was in the Army at Ft Ord we moved into a barracks just vacated by the MPs.
First thing I did was paint all the brass bathroom fixtures white!

I believe the OP is referring to the Espee practice of painting injectors, boiler check valves  and perhaps other steam appliances red.

Can anyone think if a PRACTICAL reason for doing so?

.....other than it looked cool.

They also painted the cab doors and windows the same red.
