Steam & Excursion > Double-header through Eaton, 1939.Date: 02/07/19 06:24 Double-header through Eaton, 1939. Author: tolland Here's another "run and grab" photo from Art Burrill's camera. UP2232 is a Mikado "MacArthur" class locomotive in the lead of what appears to be another Mikado, headed northbound at Eaton and I suspect the date is 1939. The Mikado locomotives were the workhorse of the UP. This would not be the speediest passenger train on the docket because the Mikado class didn't have the speed of other passenger locomotives on the UP.

This locomotive has been upgraded with high-efficiency Sweeney exhaust nozzles and smokestack. This reduced exhaust back pressure (thereby increasing cylinder power output) while maintaining sufficient partial smokebox vacuum to pull of enough air through the firebed for efficient combustion. Don Strack's utahrails.net website has an excellent explanation of these upgrades: http://utahrails.net/up/steam-smoke-stacks.php

Author: MaryMcPherson Minor detail... the "MacArthur" moniker came as a backlash to the name "Mikado" being a Japanese reference. While calling 2-8-2's MacArthur types took hold during and after the war years, its use didn't come until after Pearl Harbor. The leader was just a Mike in 1939.
