This series of heavy mikes was used here a lot. Bill Swartz lived at Peru and took a lot of top notch photos of this series. 1189 languished at Russell, KY, along with the 1604, 614/611, and several of the K-4's for years after everything else was cut up. Finally the 1189 met the torch along with the 2700's.

The “larger version” was the C&O K-4, 2-8-4, Kanawahs; after the Kanawah River (plural, say: KAN-nawzz) However, the crews commonly referred to the bigger engines as “K-4 MIkes”. Go figure ... W. |
