Steam & Excursion > Even At Their Very Last, These Locomotves Really Stood Out!Date: 03/08/19 03:39 Even At Their Very Last, These Locomotves Really Stood Out! Author: LoggerHogger The Diamond & Caldor Railway was known for "flying under the radar" both with many fans and more importantly with the California State railroad inspector. Many fans missed seeing this charming narrow gauge operation in action, even though it was less than 50 miles from the State Capital of Sacramento.
In this fine color view taken in 1951 at Diamond Springs, California, we see what they all missed. The D&C was noteworthy for the grime and rust that was present on all the rolling stock durig her last years of operation. In this view we see D&C 3-truck Shay #8 taking a short load of empty log cars out to camp with barrels of oil and gasolines for the machines in the woods. Sadly, just when the D&C was discovered by railfans, she was discovered still sporting illegal link-and-pin couplers by the state railroad inspector. That was the end of her. All good things, even the rusty and grimy ones, come to and end. Such was the case for the D&C. Martin Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 03/08/19 03:54 by LoggerHogger. The boxcar and covered hoppers in the backgroung identify the location of SP's Diamond Springs siding and mainline of the Placerville branch. The covered hoppers would be for Diamond Lime, about 1/4 mile east. The crossbuck in the backgroung appears to be the Depot Road Crossing, still easily located since the SP right of way has been converted into a well used walking trail. I would guess this shot is near todays China Garden Road and Missouri Flat Rd.
