That is one of the three ash hoppers needed on such a big firebox/ash pan. One ash hopper on each side, and one larger one in the middle, between the wheels. I wonder why this one order didn't go to Baldwin?

One could reply that they went to Baldwin when they were looking for backward designs, but decided to go with Lima when they needed forward thinkers. But I won't do it. Probably had more to do with the success that both Alco and Lima were having with "super power" designs, and the success that SP was having with their Lima 4-8-4s. Besides, did Baldwin even have/offer a 2-8-8-4 super power model? Date: 03/23/19 08:27 Re: OTD: SP 2-8-8-4 'Yellowstone' #3800 (1940) Author: wcamp1472 Jack:
Who built the B&O EM-1, 2-8-8-4? Who built the iron ore haulers for DM& IR, 2-8-8-4? Yes, Baldwin built many.. Wes.. Date: 03/23/19 08:38 Re: OTD: SP 2-8-8-4 'Yellowstone' #3800 (1940) Author: utwazoo valmont Wrote:

All twelve vacated betwen 6/12/53 (3800) and 7/22/55 (3808). Last two (3804-5) sold for scrap 5/27/56 to California Metals, Pittsburg. Besides, did Baldwin even > have/offer a 2-8-8-4 super power model? You mean the AC-12 did not fall into a "super power" category? Sorry, I don't know the engine numbers or the date.

We had these up here in Northern Nevada running on the Modoc line after they were converted to oil - there are some great shots and a lot of builder's information. I've always liked this class - Daylight GS-4s and AC-9s were both built by Lima.

These two may be 3801, 3811 as both scrapped at National Metals on 3/4/55, and I recall NM was on Terminal Island. Enlarging the number plate in your first photo makes it look like 3811. Purdy(2) and Luria(4) scrapped another six at LA harbor area. btw, the 3800 was scrapped at El Paso (presumably by the SP) on 7/29/53 SP also scrapped 3810 at Sacramento. The DM&IR 2-8-8-4s were actually based on WP 251 class 2-8-8-2s. They got the 4 wheel trailing truck due to the weight of the all weather cabs the Missabe requested, so they were not a specific 2-8-8-4 design. Haven't seen anyone mention the nickname I've always heard for these SP engines: "Gila Monsters" Z |
