Sweden Steam 2

Here are a few more from Dietmar Kramar's May 2018 Sweden tour. First: 2-6-0T No. 4 is seen on the 891mm narrow gauge line between Skara and Ludsbrunn heritage railway. Second, 2-8-0 No. 5 is on our charter train on the 891mm heritage line between Faringe and Barby. Also on the platform is the day's service train. Third, no train. But signals at 11:00P at Jadraas on the 891mm Jadraas-Tallas-Svartbacken Nedre railway. On this tour, we could have photographed about 18 hours per day if sleep and food weren't required.

A previous visit had been made to Sweden in May, 2015. The occasion was the Centenary celebration at the fine museum at Gavle, located north of Stockholm on the Baltic Sea coast. Many pre-1915 locomotives, not normally in steam were brought out on main line tracks for the occasion. First: 2-2-2 No. "Gota" built in 1866 by Beyer Peacock is seen on the turntable at Storvik.  Second: 0-4-2 No. 8 is seen at the Gavle Museum roundhouse. Last: "Gota" is seen again departing Gavle's main station with a museum special. It's amazing that these ancient locomotives and carriages were allowed out on the main line for this occasion.

The last picture is amazing.  I can see Amtrak allowing that out of Philly or Baltimore. NOT.

Any idea how they settled on 891mm for their track gauge?  Seems like an odd number, especially since European locomotive builders were probably already equipped with all the tooling for meter guage.

891 mm is 3 Swedish feet in their old measurement system.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_units_of_measurement#Length
