I agree! I really don't understand what some folks here consider "ugly" and "beautiful" steam engines, but I do know that is one big beauty! Greaty job, guys!

Thanks tolland, for posting these. I have my share of memories with the world's biggest operating steam locomotive between 2008 and 2010 when I was able to see her in person, including when she pulled the Circus Train.

Great set of images of a once great steam locomotive that could have represented the UP well at the golden spike for a fraction of the cost. She will be missed..... Thanks for sharing the images.

Judging by the fence in the foreground, I'd say that is departing North Platte, NE. westbound on the last day of returning from the Super Bowl event in Houston, TX. Don't remember the year, but I sure as hell remember how cold and snowy it was from Kansas City, to Mareysville, to North Platte. It was well below zero degrees F the night before that photo was taken, and even the steam lines to the steam operated cylinder cocks froze up!

I brought up the question of 3985 not participating in 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Union Pacific Railroad in 2012. To me, that's the bigger shame, a chance for a last hurrah had the manager's intent been more transparent. He missed his chance of being a real hero.

Jack, wasn't that where the engine was froze down and where Reed took the photo that ended up on the playing cards.

The original intentions were to have three operable Steam Engines and one triple header but unfortunately Mr. Young is no longer with us.

What parts from3985 (other than the tender) have been taken to restore 4014?

1) The burner for the oil firing.
2) All the oil piping for oil firing.
3) The Fireman's oil firing valve and handle/quadrant assembly.
4) Both air pumps.
5) Complete cab signal and ATC equipment.
6) The fire door assembly for an oil fired locomotive.
