Steam & Excursion > UP 4014 + UP 844 Arriving Granger, Wyoming, May 6 at Dawn

Reminiscent of a cool winter morning in southern Africa during the days of regular steam service, on the morning of Monday, May 6, 2019, UP 4014 + UP 844 are seen arriving in Granger, Wyoming at dawn. The ambient temperature was 34° F (1° C), with calm wind.

There seems to be a huge amount of criticism about the Big Boy actually running or not and if it is being pushed or not.   Just to clear the record, I have witnessed with my own eyes and ears the Big Boy actually working and in the included photo, it is more than clear that the Big Boy is producing a very clear Con Trail of steam from the stack, indicting as clearly as could be indicated that the locomotive is passing a huge amount of steam through the cylinders and out the stack.  The discussion about the validity of the locomotive actually producing work needs to stop.  Big Boy 4014 is working steam!

Super lighting and photo. The passenger cars don't show the yellow color making it look like another train entirely. Nice work!

Great photo...

Looks like 844 is working and 4014 smokin a lot (at 34 degrees there should be something showing at the front pistons and drivers, like on the 844)...   Later when it left Carter, WY after unscheduled 20 minute stop (some there near the live feed were commenting it appeared they had stopped to check front pistons of 4014) it started putting up dark billowing smoke well after leaving town.

This is one of the few pix from the past few days that captures it all: nice lighting, some clagg, and the looooooong graceful length of the Big Boy clearly shown.  And not a lot of distractions in the composition.  Yeah, it does have a Brit look to it, the Brits get you up early and keep you out late for pix like that!

there is some...

All that work and they couldn't be bothered to have the front water car facing in the correct direction.
The flag flies forward, not backwards. This is basic flag etiquette 101.

That picture is beyond belief!

Best photo by far of the event. The lighting helps to hide the modern intrusions excepting the diesel. That's what photo shop is for. Why couldn't they at least have put it on the back out of sight. Assume for operational reasons.
