The Big Boy May Be Old, But It's Not This Old
Author: walstib

While waiting for the 4014 to depart Evanston yesterday, I noticed some railfans set up next to something older than the locomotive itself — a piece of 114-year-old rail rolled by the Illinois Steel Company's South Works — along a little-used section of yard track.

Note that the rail has been turned around, the outside now placed on the inside, because the side of the rail head originally on the inside was fatigue cracked from cyclic stress of wheel loading.
