Midwestern big boy? (IAIS QJ) (1 of 3)
Author: SR_Krause

A few photos from today's runs with IAIS 6988. The 9 AM train out of Chillicothe had lovely blue skies and clear morning light! By 11 however, we got a line of thundershowers through that turned it distinctly grubby. But I got some shots I enjoy in the drizzle - I think the steam shows better, because that sag at Senachwine Creek doesn't stress the QJ one little bit, so smoke was scarely seen.

I also seem to have caught a TO denizen hard at work with video cameras....

#1: Rock Island, Santa Fe, and (fainly) Iowa Interstate logos all visible at once!
#2: I know some folks don't care for it, but I LIKE that lightning stripe!
#3: Not the best composed, but she's a very loooong locomotive. My wife observed 6988 has a look/feel like Frisco 1630: 5 set of low drivers and quite a lot of visibility under the boiler.

There's more...

3rd photo shows the whistles, one looks like a bronze flat top, probably a three chime, I've never heard it so just guessing. But what's known about the other one ? Is that one of the Chinese five chimes, or something domestic ?

I'm curious about the same question, but I'll add to your confusion. The "service" whistle is on the left, front. It's mounted on that forward casing. (See photo.)

One of the reasons these locomotive look a little different to the American eye is the lack of "steam dome/sand dome", just that one long, extended 'skyline' dome.

I prefer to remember them like this. But happy a few have been saved including three here in the States.

My wife and I were talking tonight about what makes a locomotive look "American" versus why Chinese locomotives, as-built, look "wierd" to us. It always seems like to boils down to subtleties like paint, headlight placement and other ornamentation. Thanks for sharing your image!
