Looks like I will be taking a day off from summer camp when it traverses the Adams Sub.

Really? The 2716 is dead-in-tow, so who wouldn't want to see a LIVE 4014?

Why? 4014 will be sitting on those dates. 2716 will be moving.

OK, so you would rather see a dead-in-tow locomotive, rather than a real live UP 4000?????  Give me a break!

I wonder why Ed didn't comply with that with 844 back in 2010-2011!

You are thinking calendar days.
Washout is figured on service days.
Engine could stand without a fire, and not count as a service day.

You could catch 4014 moving, then see 2716 moving, and then pick up 4014 moving again after. See, they are not mutually exclusive. I'm generally much more fond of seeing trains that are moving myself.

Thank you! Yes I would rather see a dead in tow locomotive than a live static display for 3 days.

Well since you know the rules so well, why didn't you make sure Ed knew them when he put 844 full of mud?

To be more clear, the locomotive must sit "without a fire" (in the firebox of course), for at least 24 hours, in order to save one Service Day, in the eyes of the FRA. Thus, the process of slowly filling the boiler virtually completely full of water, at within a few pounds of the maximum working pressure, just prior to, say 11:55PM. Then drop the fire. The following day, at say 5 minutes AFTER midnight (00:05AM), the fire is relighted, and boiler pressure & water are slowly increased, while on display. As a result, one "Service Day" is saved, since there was no fire for at least 24 hours.

Why all the hullabaloo over a boiler wash? It's a normal part of operating a steam locomotive. Take the engine OOS for a day and just do it.

And as far as seeing the 4014, even sitting static but hot, I'm looking forward to seeing it, and perhaps meeting some people, in Duluth. Already have reservation for lodging, and hoping to get some throttle time on another engine, DM&N 332, which will be making daily trips from the same location in Duluth to Two Harbors.
