Reading & Northern 425 Mountain Top Excursion
Author: PennRailVideos

On Saturday July 6th, Reading & Northern was the operator of a steam excursion sponsored by the Mountain Top Rotary Club, from Mountain Top to Jim Thorpe and return.

The trip isn't very long in terms of mileage, and since the layover time in Jim Thorpe is about four hours, makes this a very relaxing chase compared to trips in the fall.

First shot is at the Glen Summit Spring Water Company. Next, we went for the wall just south of White Haven before the railroad crosses over the Lehigh River. On the return trip, we tried something a little different at Glen Onoko.

Despite being a somewhat rainy day, we managed to get some shots when it was sunny (and HOT). Thanks for looking!

Nice shots, Adam!  Gotta get myself over to location #2 one day!

Thanks for sharing - and not making us all go to FB.

Are all of these shots on a steep upgrade?

Love your 3rd photo. No diesel, well maintained track, a classic engine, and heavyweight open window coaches in nice scenery. Good for the R&N, and doing this while growing their freight business. Certainly one of the best short line RR. I’m looking forward to seeing more of them as our son just moved to that area from Atlanta.

Pictures 1&2 are southbound “downhill” and the 3rd picture is the return trip heading up the grade. This year the diesel was placed on the hind end to save a few moves at Jim Thorpe and Mountaintop northbound. It was just extra tonnage.
