Looks like the first run of the last year(1968).  It was late May 1968 south of Alamosa.  This train went to Antonito, then on to Chama. The helper was on it to Cumbres, and it ran light to Gato I believe.  Here or somewhere nearby they may have doubleheaded up the grades east of Durango.  These two engines were used on the Silverton trains, and they had to be there for the Memorial Day opening of trains to Silverton.  It was rare for a freight to run straight through in one day.
There were only 5 round-trip full freights that year to Farmington.
John West has shots of this trip also.

Further.....

The date of the photo was Tuesday May 28, 1968.

My family was there for the stuff after this trip.

Sunday June 2nd,  We arrived in Durango after doing a trip on 8444

Monday June 3rd ,we chased (478) which pulled these cars from Durango to Farmington, completing its Journey from Alamosa.

Tuesday June 4th 498 went east from Durango with some of the cars 478 brought back from Farmington(Empties mostly). Chased to Gato
Also that day, 483 and 493 took another train of loads from Alamosa to Chama.

Wednesday June 5th, 1968 498 went west Chama to Durango with the loads brought from Alamosa
483 and 493(As rear helper), went east Chama to Alamosa, being the first eastbound train to Alamosa in 1968.

Really cool photo, sure wished I could have seen that. A little early for my time though. Thanks for posting.

Of note, also.  Both K-28 locomotives in the photo sport their fake diamond stacks, but do NOT have spark arrestors on this trip.  Of course, except for a short period during the very dry 1930's, the K-36 and K-37 D&RGW locos never sported external spark arrestors until after they passed out of D&RGW ownership.  The presence of spark arrestors on the K-36's (480-484, and 486-489) or K-37 (497) is an almost sure way to spot a "recreated" freight or passenger train photo from the post-D&RGW era, versus the real thing from the D&RGW days.

The location is Estrada between Alamosa and Antonito.   I have several b&w negs at the same location.

Estrella....

The location was a mystery because of the building next to the track and the wide open country to the left and the rear.

The building is gone now, but with the exception of Estrella and La Jara the track is allways next to the highway.

Thanks for the correction.  I’ll correct my negatives label.
