Her Factory Fresh Look Is Gone, But She Is Still A Workhorse!
Author: LoggerHogger

When H.L. Arey would visit logging camps in the Oregon Coast Range in the 1920's on his day off from his job as locomotive engineer for the Southern Pacific, he would bring along his trusty camera to see what other locomotives he could record on film.  He did not expect to find the logging engines parked in camp to be in the same state of repair and cleanliness as the SP engines he was assigned to run.  Whe he came into this camp at Hulbert, Oregon, he was not disappointed.

This well-worn 2-truck Climax #3 is in the emply of McCall Logging on the day that Arey stopped by to capture her on film.  She shows little of the spit and polish that she wore when she first left the Climax Locomotive plant in Corry, Pennsylvania.  However, such polish and shine is not what she was built for.  She clearly is still putting in a days work for a days pay in the old-groth fir forests of the Oregon Coast Range.

What more could we ask of her to do?

Martin,

That photograph captures the total essence of a 1920 era logging railroad, camp and operation.

Thanks for posting!
