UP 4014 "Big Boy' Colton Barstow tickets
Author: Spikes

Decided to ride the steam passenger special and ordered a dome seat. The funds help preserve the exhibits at Railgiants.org where tickets are on sale. My friend, DC, bought 3. We ride on Oct 12, 2019. The 13th is also available. Once the PR starts, they should sell fast. A 15 car train is planned but subject to change. It will be grand, especially running "The Hill", Cajon Pass. California, here it comes!

I've thought about it and knowing they will have the coaches buttoned up it makes it hard for me to spend that type of coin. If it goes through Oregon and northern California I will chase it there. If not I will head down to Cajon for the show. But I can't justify the 700 especially for only one way. One of my fondest experiences is riding the 4449 in the baggage car up stampede pass. Two days with lodging and I think it was less than that.

Spikes -

I also bought a dome seat... I will probably see you onboard! It was very easy to purchase the ticket on the Rail Giants site... their website is not hard to navigate, at all. It is a worthwhile cause... preserving the history of railroads in the US of A, which is the endeavor of Rail Giants in Pomona, not to mention what the R&LHS's mission is. I believe that the chair car and lower dome car seats will sell out before the end of this coming week.

Do you get a specific seat in the dome or is it first in at train time, first choice?

Tom -

There is no clickable button on the RG "excursion ticket purchasing" page, so as to reserve a particular seat. However, they do have a field box wherein the purchaser can "Make a special request". I used that option to not only request to be seated onboard one of the available dome cars, but I requested what side I wanted to sit on, regarding said dome car. Will have to wait until I receive the ticket in the mail to see if my request will be fulfilled or not.

There are 4 classes of tickets, and, in each class there are two dates and two types of seating. Look over all the choices from $700 to $1800.

SR,

I do not have 76 days to paddleboard to Dana Point, so I am installing a small electric motor on the aft of the paddleboard ;-) ... All kidding aside, a Spaniard (from the same region in Spain as my grandparents) just arrived in Waikiki from San Francisco yesterday (it was the top story on the evening news last night here), having piloted his custom-built (it has an aero body) paddleboard from the city where I was born: https://www.khon2.com/news/local-news/stand-up-paddler-paddles-from-san-francisco-to-waikiki/
SR - If you are taking the excursion on the 12th, I will probably see you at the early breakfast at the Metrolink station.

I Hope with charging ticket prices that high, the 4014 can pull the entire train up cajon under its own power without the diesel pushing it all the way up. Hope they get the steaming / burner problem fixed by then. Heck take the burner off the 3985 everything else is gone.

What problem and how did you hear? Maybe a rumor?

How do we know where the breakfast is served? Is it on the ticket order?

Spikes,

Will answer your 2nd question first: The "complimentary limited breakfast service" at the Metrolink station in Rancho Cucamonga (my middle school soccer coach in San Francisco, told the school bully who tried to extort my lunch money: "If you bully my left wing again, I'm gonna knock your head all the way to Cucamonga" - when I asked "Where is Cucamonga, coach?" , he replied "Far away!" ... LOL) is noted on the RG website's purchasing page, and on the purchase confirmation letter itself, which was sent in an individual email - here is the text on said confirmation letter: Ticket includes a one way train ride in a vintage dome car, commemorative T-shirt and pin, limited breakfast service, beverages, snacks ...". Of note: I can attest that half a dozen choices are offered for the lunch onboard all of the dome cars - the Premium Dome seats have hot lunch choices, and the non-Premium have a "box lunch". I called and the breakfast will be served next to the ticket machines underneath the green canopied structure.

Many of us on TO are still waiting to hear about the 4014 steaming/burner problem that CS alluded to.
