Steam & Excursion > UP 5511 dynamoDate: 08/25/19 15:39 UP 5511 dynamo Author: 5511_ The top portion of this image shows UP 2-10-2 5511 in 1950, wearing what looks to me like a Pyle-National MO6 dynamo. The bottom portion shows the same locomotive in 1957 with what appears to be a different one. My question is what type is the dynamo in the lower half of the picture, or am I stupid and it's just the same one spun around during a shopping?

There’s many items swapped around during maintenance. Try to keep track is a challenge... There are many variants to the same basic appliance...and in competitive product lines, attempts to steer around patented designs led to many versions ... of similar devices.. If its decided to repair repair an ‘accessory’...it makes more sense to unbolt the item needing attention ( rather than tie-up a loco for an indefinite period of time..) and simply apply a qualified, rebuilt generator from the “electric shop.” I’m not up on my knowledge of PyleNational models...but, the replacement looks to be a smaller model.. Probably performs fine.. W. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/25/19 16:20 by wcamp1472. Date: 08/25/19 18:04 Re: UP 5511 dynamo Author: 5511_ wcamp1472 Wrote:

Basically I'm building an HO scale model of 5511 as she appeared in Last of the Giants in 1958, eBay has lots of brass dynamo castings but I'm not sure which one would be correct. I've thought of backshops and even large roundhouses being somewhat like a big auto transmission shop. Car comes in, needs a transmission overhaul. They pull a rebuilt out of stock, install it and send the customer on his way. Meanwhile the shop has a whole department rebuilding transmissions for inventory. Same with backshop stores. When we restored 1522, there were pieces stamped with other engine numbers in many spots. Same principle. Date: 08/26/19 09:29 Re: UP 5511 dynamo Author: PHall Frisco1522 Wrote:

Yeah, I've seen pictures of one of the remaining C&O 2-8-4's with all sorts of engine numbers on the rods. Last time I was in scranton I spent most of the day snooping around 4012 looking for the same thing. I love little details like that.
