Steam & Excursion > Some "new" oldies in the UP Cheyenne yard

Passed through Cheyenne yesterday and caught some "new" pieces of well-used/abused
equipment.  There is "new" tender on the storage line visible from the depot parking lot and
W15th St.  ... it looks in pretty sad shape ... couldn't see a number ... any guesses out there?

There was also a "well-decorated" antique diesel as well on one of the active tracks.  Have no
clue about it and I don't recall ever seeing a locomotive with that high style cab profile ...

That was the tender off of 4014. Also there has been a Genset parked across the tracks which I believe may have been part of the big auction earlier this year.

Didn't happen to catch the numbers of the passenger cars near the tender.
One yellow and one silver baggage car it would seem.
Even better would be a photo or two. Thanks.

UPY2706 appears to be a former resident of the Fourth Street Yard in Los Angeles.
Is this the replacement for the SW10 that went to Portland?

Graham ... Unfortunately, I did not get any images of the passenger cars,
and I did not write down their numbers ...

Funny you should call it "antique."  I was thinking just recently myself how old an NRE 3GS21B looks, and not just thanks to the abuse of the taggers.  The hoods of nearly even height hark back to units like the EMD NW-5, Alco RS-1, and Baldwin RS-12, and the utilitarian angularity would have been at home back in the very early days of US dieselization among things like EMC's pre-production NC for Philadelphia Bethlehem & New England or the Ingersol-Rand powered hood unit switchers GE built for Bush Terminal:

Strange to say, UPY 2706 is only twelve years old, built in January 2007.  It's full 35 years younger than the SD40-2 (now "SD40N") it's coupled to, and yet somehow the aged "porch" looks far more modern.

I don’t think so, I recall seeing a few photos and videos of UP #1472 (whatever model locomotive that is) in the steam shop. Good choice on the number.

The current UPY 1472 is an EMD MP15AC. The previous steam program switch engine was a SW10 that was numbered UPP 96.
It got sold at one of the auctions. Ended up in Portland in the same facility that SP 4449 is at.

No. SW10 #96 was enroute to an auction, but was subsequently withdrawn from that auction and then formally donated by the Union Pacific to the ORHF center in Portland, OR.
Thus, it was never "sold".

Ended up in

Correct.

#2706 came through Salt Lake City last week. I didn't get any pics, but I was surprised at how badly tagged it was.

I live in Los Angeles. The 4 th street yard where the 2706 was parked is a open area, lots of gang and homeless people around. Was used to take rail cars through some of the worse neighborhoods here.

I can gurantee you that is where it came from, I took pics of that and 2 other Gensets when they were new from no. 3 and no. 4 and a few years later they started looking like crap, no way on getting good pics!
