4014 Leaving Provo

UP 4014 left Provo, UT on Friday (Oct. 4) and headed to Milford on its journey to California. I was able to catch it leaving Provo and just south of Provo before I had to head to work.

1) Heading around the wye from the old Rio Grande mainline to the UP Sharp Subdivision. Ed and someone else were checking on something as it slowly made its way around the wye.

2 & 3) Near Santaquin the line climbs 500 feet to exit Utah Valley. Barry curve is a 6 degree near-horseshoe curve built to keep the climb at 1%. Big Boy sounded great climbing the grade.

Many thanks to Union Pacific and the steam crew.

Great photos Searchlight, looks like we crossed paths twice. I was on the other side of the bridge shooting across the mains in your first photo. And then I was probably 100 ft from you on Barry curve. That sure was a fun chase!

Wonder if the bell is giving them a fit. They messed with it at Rawlins as well.

Yes, but the train was probably going slower than a walking pace. There’s a video of it on YT that somebody posted.

That's a nice little hill and some decent curves on the way up past the Fruit Stand.
