Steam & Excursion > This Helper Engine Crew Is Certainly Very Proud Of Their Job!

Deep in the Salmonberry River Canyon at Southern Pacific's siding named Salmonberry, H.L. Arey take time to capture himself and his fireman on film as the wait for the next train they will tie into for the climb over the summit of the Tillamook Branch.  The date is May 15, 1933 and these men are both good at their jobs and also quite proud of their jobs.

Today, Salmonberry, Oregon still sees steam trains thanks to the hard work of our Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad crews.

The scene was taken at a time when (unofficially) unemployment was nearing 25%. These guys must count themselves among the very fortunate.

They don't exactly look like they were hired yesterday. Just shows how much seniority you needed to stay employed at that time.

Beyond the story of those times, it is a truly excellent photo, it has about a good a range of grays as one could hope to capture.

Agreed, a full range image from black to white, with subtle grays in between, giving almost a three dimensional effect.  Mr Arey knew what he was doing as a photographer as well as an engineer.

I love his forced casual pose on the footboard; great photo!
