Steam & Excursion > Frosty departure for 4014

The forecast temperature  for UP 4014's departure from Prescott, Arkansas tomorrow morning (Wednesday) is 18F.

       Pretty sure the diesels pushing it have no trouble at these low temperatures, they will do fine.

Originally all the UP "big three" steam locomotives that were equipped with all-weather cabs, had steam heating coils under each side, plus in the winter, the rear folding doors were closed and a steam heating coil arrangement was mounted inside on the back wall.  I doubt that all that was restored during the overhaul.

That will make for a lot better photos than the ultra-clear stack we got in warm SoCal. At least you'll be able to see the steam.

You know it!  Even the run up Cajon pass was a little unimpressive as far as steam power goes.  The diesels were shoving hard all the way.

Now if I were anywhere in that area and looking to chase the 4014, that would be exactly the kind of information I would hope for.  I suspect there should be some enormous clouds of steam to liven up the images, much as I was lucky to experience west from Evanston some weeks ago.
