Not the sharpest image and no photographer name, but the subject won the day ... Clinchfield 2-8-8-2 #208 @ Erwin, TN 7/20/49.

Well the stack is capped so it's pretty clear it's out of service.

I remember this very location in Erwin in 1958.  There were four 4-6-6-4's there which I photographed.   NONE of them were ever saved.

Iconic photo only due to it being in B&W . .  grime at its best including the plume from the stack . .

CRR did worry about esthetics.  They just wanted to get the job done.

Its clearly a ‘capped’ stack and cold ... the stack cap is square, with bent-down corners...

I'm thinking "spdaylight" may be making reference to the industry visible to the far right in the image?
