Steam & Excursion > This Engines Crew's All At Their Assigned Spots During This Stop!

Southern Pacific's Train #2 with 4-8-4 #4430 as power is stopped for water and we see here engineer, fireman and conductor all taking care of their assigned tasks before they proceed on.

#4430's engineer is on the ground with his hammer inspecting the running gear for any cracks or defects.  The fireman is high up on the tender manning the wheel valve on the water spout.  Finally, the conductor has also gotten off to check around hist train to be sure in his mind all is right before they proceed on their way.

Once every one is satisfied that #4430 has her tender filled and all else is right, they will get back to their seats in the cab and in the train as train #2 speeds off for the next stop.

Looks like a brakeman. But, kinda weird why he is up front at a regular station stop at Colton. Given he has gloves on, maybe he is there awaiting a helper to couple on to the front end for the climb up Beaumont Hill. 

This photo of the eastbound Sunset Limited is probably around 1947...or so. The train departed Los Angeles at 12:30PM during this time period.

I tend to agree it’s the brakeman. Has gloves on so I figure he’s gonna make the air or something. Also don’t see any service stripes on his uniform? S.P. Practice?

Agree that he could be waiting for a helper.  Note that the coupler knuckle appears to be open.
