ATSF 3751 status?
Author: SGillings

The 3751 website has no updates on the status of the 15 year boiler inspection.  If anyone on TO is involved with the 3751 or is aware of what is going on, about how much longer is estimated for inspection completion and putting it back together?  Also, since the group bought 3 Amtrak cars (former ATSF) for support, what will they do with the former Amtrak/Seaboard car that they first bought for support?  Inquiring minds on TO want to know.

How many of you guys have thought of 3751 and 2926 doubleheading?   But, pulling what?  Running where?  Whose insurance?   But the most important question is...  who is on front?

I have heard that volunteers at the Amtrak LA facility are replacing flues, tubes, lagging, and jacket as they undergo the 15 year FRA certification. They hope for completion before the summer heat. Donations would assist then greatly at San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society or SBRHS.ORG. The 3751, a Santa Fe 4-8-4, was restored in 1991 and has operated over 25 times, with many passenger trips, even to Chicago and Grand Canyon from LA.

Steve - The 230 re-build is just about complete. Super heaters are in place and attached to the manifold.
Should be finished soon. The SBRHS 1517 has been "de-assesed" and is going to another 501(c) 3 Organization.
They  are making room  to accept the 3 cars from Amtrak. The funds from the "1517 Campaign"  will be used to prepare the cars for operation.
It's a small "working crew" so, be patient.

This would be a perfect combination for a BNSF Anniversary / Employee Special train, systemwide.  Just imagine the crowds and good P.R. !!

2926 leaders have discussed running a double-header train with  3751 over now lightly-used NMDOT tracks in central NM,  avoiding  rail-choked southern Cal.
They planned an Abq replacement roundhouse at the still-operable turntable, part of the  3-developer-stalled, former ATSF, now  city-run backshops rebuild.
Another problem--getting '51 to NM over the jammed BNSF Transcon.
'51, rebuilt ahead of '26, got important guidance and  help from Bob Kittel and other SBRHS experts.
There are plans to run that steam tourist train, Abq-Las Vegas NM, where  former Fred Harvey, just-rebuilt Casteneda Hotel is now open, done  by an historic developer who restored another, popular Fred Harvey hotel in Winslow, AZ, modernized La Fonda hotel in Santa Fe.

2926 needs pistons/rods/heads installed, boiler sheathing finished, cab controls complete, more testing, will probably be rolling by years end.
