Steam & Excursion > C&TSRR = Rotary Event = Snow

I was thinking about the Rotary event coming the end of this month and snow. I went to the first crossing Sunday [02-09-20] to check out the snow and IMHO we are going to need more snow.

Wasn't any difffeerent on the three trips in the seventies, you had to plan so you picked dates and took your chances.

Now if we can just get a chance to see it without being run off by the authorities as previously stated. 
How's the snow up around Windy Point and Cumbres Roger?

The last predicted "big" snowstorm for the C&TS area dove way farther south than predicted, leaving little snow for southern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico, including the area around Chama and Cumbres.  That has been pretty much the story for that area most of this winter--storms either going north or south of the area.  The National Weather Service has consistently over-predicted snow storms for southern Colorado and northern New Mexico this winter, despite ample evidence that a drier than normal weather pattern seems pretty entrenched over the region since December.  

It's also worth noting that normal monthly average snowfall totals for Chama decline from January onward, though water content of snow increases in March, with February being lower than January or March for water content.  See here:  http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weatherall.php3?s=466192&units= .  For those who are interested, here is the Cumbres Snotel data:  https://wcc.sc.egov.usda.gov/reportGenerator/view/customSingleStationReport/daily/431:co:SNTL%7Cid=%22%22%7Cname/2019-10-01,0/WTEQ::value,WTEQ::delta,SNWD::value,SNWD::delta .  The Cumbres Snotel is located in a protected site fairly close to Windy Point, where the snow depth would be about the maximum for an undrifted location.  53" inches of depth is little more than about 60%-65% of what can be there in a relatively normal winter at this point.  There can always be one or two big storms that can change the picture, but my prediction, based on many years of observing Rocky Mountain weather patterns, is that the odds are against the rotary having a lot of snow to plow, except in cuts or drifted areas.  Accumulated ice at ground level may also be an issue.
