N&W 611 in Strasburg from 9/29
Author: OCtrainguy

I was going through some photos recently and it seems I hadn't really gone through or edited any photos from my trip to see the N&W 611 at the end of September.  My son and I made a weekend out of it and he was very happy to be riding behind the 611 on Sunday.

1.  The 611 in its spot when in between runs.  My son and I took the cab tour and he loved it.
2.  The 611 pulling into the station
3.  The 611 taking on water.  I wanted to get more of the water tower, but when I looked at the photo, I didn't see the person next to me with their IPad and elbow in my photo.

A few more to follow..

Continuing the photos...

4.  Since I had time while the engine was taking on water, I also got a color photo in
5.  The excursion train is pushed into the station by the switcher, so I got the 611 and the Philadelphia & Reading observation car
6.  The two N&W engines at the station area, with the 475 bringing its train in.

The last photo became more of a challenge then I thought.  After the excursion train with the 475 left, I picked my spot to wait for it to come back, thus getting the two N&W steam engines together in the station area.  During that time, people were taking photos of the 611, both railfans and the casual Strasburg patron,  People would come, take their photo with whatever device they were using and then be on their way.  Then, I had a young man walk up and stop in front of meas I was on the edge of the yellow line.  He knew I was there, but didn't seem to care.  I asked if he was getting a photo of the 611, thinking then he'd be on his way.  He said no, he was waiting for the 475 to return.  I politely said I was too, which is why I was in that spot as the headlight of the 475 appeared.  He didn't say anything, but did move away.

It was a great weekend, and am so glad the 611 was able to go to Strasburg.  Hope you enjoy the photos.

Oh that built up extended tender coal bunker.  It just doesn't look right.      Don't bother writing back...I know what you are going to say.

Ya think, I've been saying that for years! And everyone else is worried about the damn headlight!!!!

Well, concerning the headlight,......if steam had lasted another decade or two longer, I'll bet that most larger locomotives would have been upgraded to twin beam headlights.

To be honest in all my years of chasing 611 it never really bothered me. Now the extended coal bunker they put on 765 a few years ago was U-G-L-Y. However, whatever it takes to keep things operating is A-OK in my book. 614 also had tender modifications to handle a lot more coal. But that was more aesthetically pleasing to my eye than either 611's or 765's.

Successful photography during 611's Strasburg visit required one to adapt, overcome, and improvise, my best pics came on a day where I did not pay a penny for being there...

Weren't the extended 'coal boards' the N&W's addition.....to a lot of their locos in the fleet, back in the day?
And, aren't they original to 611, gong back to 1959, and earlier?

In my collection,  I have slides of 611 reposing in Shaeffer's Crossing Roundhouse, June 1959.
The J was parked next to a BEAUTIFUL, ALL RB, Class A, #1240.... practically brand new, (Roanoke class of 1952?).
I was lucky to have gotten the chance to get 1218 prepped and returned to Roanoke, in 68/69...

The coal boards were added to 611 around 1990.

Coal boards were added as Kelly stated. They were added to avoid taking coal at many turn around points. Took the range up to just over 300 miles for a tender full of coal. With the A-tank water was good for 200 miles with a sufficient safety factor. Saved $1500.00+ per trip when coal was no longer taken, cranes were not cheap and added complications to spotting.

N&W did not add coal boards to any of the J's or any passenger power for that matter. Only the A Class and Y Classes received coal boards or extensions by the N&W.

Something to be said for that suggestion as well.

Because....I like to comment and point out all these "incorrect" restoration details.....without hearing about how lucky we are to see any steam at all in 2020.     Frankly, with only a little extra thinking, comparing to old photos, and attention to details, the restoration could be made to look flawless.

How much money did Strasburg make with that event?

Do you REALLY think that they will publish that information?

Buy the stock...for access to the publishable stats....like ridership, and trends..
As a publicly traded stock, SEC regs are tight about unofficial issuance of  "business statistics"....

The figures are contained in the published quarterly reports Filed with the SEC.
Buy some shares of the stock, and your curiosity will be rewarded with all the information.

But remember, you want to own a portfolio of many profit-generating stocks.
Never buy stocks because others are creating a frenzy.
Avoid trying to pick only winning stocks, it's the quality of your whole portfolio, that
will get you to your goals...
