Steam & Excursion > The Men, The Myth, The LegendsDate: 02/23/20 22:58 The Men, The Myth, The Legends Author: burlingtonjohn Two legends at the throttle of NKP 765 (spring 1979 at La Harpe IL) and C&O 614 (near La Harpe IL April 1981). It is interesting to contemplate what things would be like these days were it not for their drive and determination back in 1974 and beyond. I am deeply humbled to have rubbed shoulders and spent time with them both ...
Respectfully, Burlington John Date: 02/24/20 02:36 Re: The Men, The Myth, The Legends Author: dcfbalcoS1 And they are who . . . . . . . ? Since we don't know everyone by face recognition.

At first glance, I didn't catch that it was Doyle..... Knew them both: Ross from Fall of '66 ( prior to HICO's lease of Hart's ex-CP 1286 & 1238) & Doyle from June '68 ( when he joined HICO team on the return to service of NKP 759...) Later, Doyle & Joe Karal assisted the FWRHS greatly to return 765 to steam operation... lo, these many years ago.. I fired 765 out of Peoria, the first trips... no draft...2 GP38s and separated crew*, did all the work & leaky superheater units as well as blast pipe ( base-plate?) leak conspired to kill any beneficial draft for the firebed... Had we not had the dismals 765's debut would have gone on very well -- making own draft.. The train was easy for a loco of those dimensions.. Both Ross & Doyle are dear, and life-long friends.. It's been amazing to have seen them grow in stature, since 67/68.. Oh, the places we've been! The fast pace that they've set, and the pinnacles they've topped! Often imitated, NEVER duplicated... W. * 765 had not yet been fitted with an MU'd, trailing dismals, "electrical control box". Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 02/24/20 15:43 by wcamp1472. Great memories, thanks for sharing. Ross Rowland Date: 02/25/20 18:30 Re: The Men, The Myth, The Legends Author: BoilingMan So who are Doyle & Ross?

I'm tempted to knock it out of the Park... I've known Ross since November 66, and Doyle since June 68... 2 close and dear friends and family.. Who are they? INDEED! ( how impertinent!) I'll let others describe their experiences with these two Giants of the Steam Loco in the USA. I've known both of them, almost longer than anyone else... And they, each, enriched my life, immeasurably !!! Wes Camp ( Scoopdejour [Hank] is responsible for bringing Doyle, and Boilermaker, Joe Karal, onto the HICO steam crew ....once we landed with 759, in Conneaut, Ohio ...early June 1968)... I’ve enjoyed knowing Doyle and wife Laurie for over 40yrs. All time greatest thrill- firing the ‘49 for Doyle with the AFT. And I’m actually indebted to Ross: he vouched for me back in ‘84 and got me in the door at Amtrak. I took it from there and turned it into a career- 32yrs with On Board Services. I thank you both!
