Steam & Excursion > All Too Soon This Roundhouse Would Be Empty For All Time!

The Southern Pacific roundhouse in Mina, Nevada was once a busy place hosting both standard gauge and narrow gauge steam motive power.  However, by 1938 it's days of narrow gauge locomotives calling it home was coming to a close.

Just before the end, a few railfans ventured out to that remote little railroad town to see the operation before the last narrow gauge train left for the last time.  On this day one lucky photographer was able to catch SP narrow gauge 4-6-0's #8 and #14 inside this large structure fore one of their last visits.

All good things come to an end, and that was certainly true of the Mina roundhouse as well.

What a nice scene!  Railroads had character at one time.  Everything is so sterile and boring now.

Where would the roundhouse have been compared to the wye?

Thought that picture looked familiar. Much better framing and exposure than the one in my second edition of "Slim Rails Through the Sand". Thanks for the post.

To answer the Mina location question, the engine house was located South of the wye and in fact South of both the depot and the freight house, 
150 feet or so to the East. The wye was North of the depot, if you're looking at the Google map, there's a rectangular bare spot where the depot
stood, the South switch of the wye was almost across the tracks from there. It's amazing how little is left especially considering that prior to the
embargo and abandonment the strip between the tracks and 95 was populated by a number of businesses. All which with zero rails service are
gone.

As someone who began riding trains as a kid in the early '40s this "all crap now" stuff is ridiculous!
You had to ride trains in those days to appreciate what we have today.
I loved steam, etc., but trains were late, crowded during the war, steam engines belched filthy black smoke, etc. etc.
20 years from now folks will still be whining about "all crap now"... and pining for what we have now.
