3985 In Missouri, 1992
Author: MaryMcPherson

On November 8th, 1992, Union Pacific Challenger #3985 was headed down the DeSoto Subdivision in eastern Missouri on her way to pulling the Santa Trains on the old Clinchfield.  The day before, the locomotive had pulled a one-way public excursion from Kansas City to St. Louis.  I had been able to chase and photograph that day under overcast skies, but on this day that pesky work thing came calling.

Fortunately, Myron Dudenbostle was on hand to capture this image of the Challenger in a hurry at Ironton, Missouri.

I rode on that trip from KCMO to St Louis...it was my birthday weekend and my daughters bought my ticket...had first seat in first dome car...Challenger, IIRC.

That is a great photo of the old gal at cruising along.
That was a long trip with all its challenges on the eastern half.
But it was a success and we provided a great event on the Santa train.
