UP Big Boy Future
Author: Topper844

I have heard from three sources, that Union Pacific will "mothball the Big Boy and Northern 8444" after the 2020 season. New COO has deemed the historical collection and the steam program as counter to their reducing their sacred 'operating ratio. I know few details.... but scary.

Due to virus, the BB 2020 program may be cancelled as well. Anyone heard any news. I assume it will run in the fall, and perhaps this whote quarantine issue will be behind us. Hopefully. DB

For what it's worth, the Northern hasn't been number "8444" for about 30 years!

Don't know about "scary", but sure sounds logical.

Also logical, and prudent.

Anyone heard any news.

Nope.

I assume it will

Why would assume THAT?

Well I'm not so sure,   His rumors on the eastern board have NS just about destroying the business train.

Yes, he/she sure seems to be full of all sorts of rumors today. Wonder how long ago he/she joined TrainOrders?

Until there is a vaccine I don't see any company continuing programs that encourage large crowds to come out.  After 2020?  I would call it from 2020 into the forseeable future.  The virus is like a nuclear bomb, and the nuclear winter will be here for a couple of years.  This will be the most challenging financial environment for any railroad to operate and turn a profit.

Same Old Thing
Author: Lightning_Slinger

Back in the early 1970s, I don't remember exactly when, 844 (8444 then) was waiting for the green in the pre-dawn hours on the outbound north main on track 4 at Denver Union Station for a high-speed run to Rawlins with an NRHS special. Some guy in a hat came up to the group gathered around the locomotive and said "...A trainmaster just told us this is the last run because a decision has come down from Omaha to retire the engine."
Much panic ensued....with some...

If it goes west up Sherman Hill........I'd like to be there...one more time.   Maybe for the last time.   (I still have some unexposed 16mm Ektachrome daylight movie film, ready to go).

I assume that it is silent 16mm film.

If I recall, 8444 has belonged to an SD70ACe since 2005.

If this is true I will miss pre 2012 UP Steam, other than that it was fun while it lasted!

Most companies are cutting discretionary operating expenses wherever they can right now.  Would make sense to cut the budget for teh steam program this year, rather than having to lay off someone in operations or some ohter function that is essential to getting freight over the road.

I believe Ektachrome is an E6 process film.  Still pretty common.

Yes, Dwaynes.

Yes the steam program is expensive. The 844 received a rebuild that finished in 2016 and the restoration of 4014 was finished last year. The steam shop also received upgrades during that time, including a new overhead crane. The railroad made a cut to the program in another way. The Challenger 3985 will not return to service. This like everything else will pass. The program turns 60 years old this November and hasn't been cancelled yet.
