This Event Must Have Really Startled This Steam Locomotives Crew!
Author: LoggerHogger

As if everyday railroading back in the age of steam was not dangerous enough, this unfortunate crew of Southern Pacific's #2940 found themselves the target of quite a mudslide somewhere in Western Oregon during the early 1940's.  From the looks of it, they appear to have actually been lucky that the slide did not take them further off the tracks and down that slope to the river below.

While two of the men in the photo have already started to man their shovels, but it will take more than those two shovels to clean up this mess and get #2940 back underway again.

I wonder if that was on the Oregon Electric line between River Road and the Willamette River near South Salem?

Seriously doubt it, Bill.  Maybe the Toledo line along the Yaquina River (geographic) west of Morrison

It kind of looks like a car that you would carry pulpwood on before bulkhead flats became common.
