Colorado narrow gauge Qs
Author: BobE

Time to put the hivemind to work!I am looking for roster info on the Colorado steam tourist roads.Reason: I got a hold of a batch of Kodachromes, obviously homemade dupes from 1971-73 that are said to be dupes of photos that were taken in the 1950s and the equipment mostly scrapped. Is there a resource where I could find what equipment has graced the Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec Scenic? If there is, I could figure out the veracity of the 1950s claim by process of elimination.BTW, there are some Rio Grande Southern items duped......any pace but the Colorado Railroad Museum have any of their stuff?

TIA,

BobE

If the subject is Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR it dates from 1970 or later.
Iff the subject is Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge RR it dates from 1981 or later.

If the subject is Denver & Rio Grande Western, one would have to see the slide to approximate a date.

Do C&TS and D&SNG have their names on the tenders?  (Sorry, but, I'm just not familiar with the narrow gauge tourist roads).

If they only say D&RGW, this won't be helpful.....the slides are from 1971-73, but IDK what time frame the originals were shot except what the seller has told me.

Except for when the locomotives are re-lettered "Rio Grande" for photo charters, they are usually lettered for their home roads.

Thanks.....that reduces the complexity greatly.  Based on a quick skim through the 780 images, none have processing dates late enough to be D&SNG.  There might be some photo charters, some C&TS, buit, from what you're saying, I bet I'll find that most of the images are from the 50s after all.

I guess that'll mean folks want to see them.

By all means, yes.  Having worked for the C&TS for 20 years in the 80's-90's, I'd be interested in those too.

If you are close to Golden, Colorado, the Colorado RR Museum might be able to assist.
I would suggest you scan the photos and then send them the prints to them to review.
Otherwise, post them here in the Nostalgia Forum and see what turns up.

The D&RGW ran through 1968 with freight, but remember the Rio Grande name still applies to the Durango to Silverton portion until the D&RGW sold the line to what is now the D&S.  That change was 1981!  The C&TS started 1970 as far as the ownership, but the first trains on a full scheduled didn't start until 1971.  A give away on the C&TS stuff is all the coaches were converted box cars, which are pretty obvious once he see them.
You might also try the Narrow Gauge Discussion Board, where a bunch of us hang out including Earl.  There is vast NG (especially Colorado NG) on that board as folks are there who photographed it in the 50's to present.

Greg, you startled me with the comment about the narrow gauge board....I thought I'd missed something.  Now I see it's on another site, perhaps you could tell me where?

I'll probably break into these images in the next three-four days (start trying to sell them on my eBay site)..
