While Her Career May Be Nearly Over, This Locomotive Steams On!
Author: LoggerHogger

Built by ALCo in 1908, Northwestern Pacific #22 served that road very well for nearly 30 years by the time of this photo in the mid-1930's.  Although she is certainly capable of more years of road service, for now she is assigned to stationary boiler service at the NWP engine facilities in Sausalito.

When this duty is complete, she will be sent for scrapping in October, 1938.  Such a waste of a beautiful 4-4-0.

Should have been preserved.

They all should have been preserved. I'd take one right now on the front lawn, and deal with the consequences later ;-)

Based on boiler size and slide valves, #22 resembles an 1890 design that happened to be built in 1908.  It would be interesting to know what was the NWP's decision process in acquiring such a light locomotive.  For passenger duty the Guerneville and Sonoma Valley branches, perhaps?

Thanks for a great photo, by the way.

Correction:  the Sonoma Valley line, between Schellville and Santa Rosa, was SP, not NWP.

Weird location for the bell.

I'm just going from memory here, but I believe NWP had a fleet of later model "modern" 4-4-0's with piston valves, superheat, walschaerts valve gear...commute train locomotives that ran right up to the end, yes?

Cheers, Dave

Leaky throttle?  I see steam from the cylinder cock and snifter valve?

Not too different from this ALCo product from a year later. Ex- Mississippi Central, ex-Louisiana Eastern, now Wilmington and Western 98 shown here at Yorklyn, DE in the fall of 1980. Photo by Doug Rowland.

I don't believe the NWP had any but the SP/T&NO did. The E-23 class IIRC.

Could be the hydrostatic lubricator.

Why would a locomotive in stationary boiler service have its hydrostatic lubricator turned on?  It's not like it is going anywhere.....
