For many years I've heard about the famous race on NBC's today show with Union Pacific's 8444 & 3985 in around 1983. Well as of yesterday someone has finally decided to upload it on youtube. Great five minutes on 3985 and then the race is at end is pretty cool to see as both engines go blasting by the camera. Obviously I can't post up the link but if you simply type in "UP 3985 and UP 8444 today show 1981" it should pop up. I believe the only person I recognized was Art Lockman on the tender of 8444. Maybe Bob, Jack or someone else from the old crew can verify for us. But check it out, great old video of the good ol' days!

Wow ... fun clip!

Among others, the segment documents a photo runby with the Challenger, with numerous shots of the photo line. Where you there?  Fun seeing UP 3985 enjoing her time in the limelight.

And UP 844 masquerading as an "8400".  ;-)

I was standing near John Bromley from the PR department and the NBC team when this event took place. 
Here is the photo I took of them as they rolled by on the mainlines 2&3 in front of the Cheyenne Depot.

To answer your question the gentleman in the green hard hat at the beginning was Timmy Espinosa, fireman oiler. The gentleman checking the air pumps and riding the tender was indeed Art Lockman. The engineer for the day was Bob Neeley CMO. I believe the other engineer was Tom Stuart and the firemen for the two locomotives were Jim Chval and Jim Fitzpatrick.

I was there and I remember that they conducted that race twice that day, back to back, as 
I have slides that I took from both sides of the race.
