Frisco 1522
Author: masterphots

Nearing four months of quarantine and freezing winter weather,  it's given me lots of time to root through various slide piles.  Here's some views of Frisco 4-8-2 #1522;  what a great engine to chase and photograph.  Or just listen to the sounds of it at work.

1.  Lake Villa, IL  8/13/88.  These were some of its first outings.

2.  Same day south of Ackerman, WI

3.  Next morning at N. Fond du Lac, WI  8/14/88

4.  Byron Hill,  hard at work  8/14/88   I think Ross Rowland was at the throttle on this trip,   The engine working the grade was a sight/sound to behold.

5.  Grays Lake, WI   8/14/88

6.  East of St James, MO  6/16/90   During St Louis NRHS convention.

Bob, agreed. These are what I consider my best results over a number of chases and I think #7 has that old RR publicity look to it.

Alan, I was there for most all the 1988 stuff.  Some of the same locations as well.  The one shot I believe is indeed 1990 NRHS convention with the flowers.  I seem to have that shot or one from someone else on my video cover.  I never put my "Frisco 1522" video from 88 on DVD.  Something for the future perhaps. Nice selection of shots and fond memories.  Man was I busy in 1988-1522, 3985, 152 charter, 611, 1218, 587.  Probably missed a couple smaller ones.

See image on top of 1522...similar to yours, or could be yours!  I remember you were there, and had a rental car where the windows would not go down.  It was sweltering hot during that convention also-especially the trip to Newburg with 1522.  I remember Jim Boyd complained about the chiggers too.  She sure sounded good on Newburg Hill though.

If ever a steam locomotive could be called "elegant", I think it must be this.  Not flashy, not a brute, nothing strange or unique, just elegant.  Nice set of photos -- I especially like #8. Backlit, radius rod hooked way up and a thin smoke trail laid back low over the train say speed.

I wanted to go to Atlanta even though I'm not a member of the NRHS. I had that poor and hired out problem in 1994.

Damn Ford Taurus.  Heat/humidity did in the power windows and air conditioning.   I was close to breaking a window so we didn't pass out.  Once it cooled off all was fine.  I replaced it with a hand crank window car that night.

Gorgeous stuff, still my favorite steamer, but how could it handle those big trains without a diesel?

I think I drove somewhere between 6,000 and 7,000 miles shooting 1522 in 1988.

(1) On my way back from Arkansas after shooting 819 and some Alcos, I saw it live moving at the Museum in Kirkwood and got a short cab ride

(2) Chased it from Chicago to Fon du Lac on freight (Also a freight from Stevens Point to Fon Du Lac).

** Don Wirth will remember we were staying in the same motel at Fon du lac, and one day we had my 3/4 tape deck hooked up to a TV watching the freight stuff from Chicago north.  Anyway they were told there would be no freight the next day(WC allowed them some break-in runs), so I set off to scout the line to Stevens Point for future use.  When I arrived back at the motel around 4-5 pm, there was a message from one of the 1522 crew saying they got a last minute call to take a train to Stevens Point, and would be heading back the next day.  So I packed up and made another drive to Stevens Point, arriving around mid-night.

(3) Stevens Point to Fon Du lac....first part was longer as they dumped most of the train at (??) north of Oshkosh.

(4) Fantrips out of Chicago for a weekend was pretty good.  I was there when Ross was hauling butt up Byron Hill and beyond.  I have a similar shot as that one from someone else on my old VHS video cover.

(5) In October 1522 was operated on a pair of excursions from St. Louis to Decatur, Illinois over NS.  I chased that and was to ride part of the return in the cab. Well it was dusk when we left Decatur and dark when we reached Taylorville, but still a good experience.

I would see 1522 at the 1990 convention and not after that.  One of the best parts of the convention was after it was over.  1522 doubleheaded with 844 back to the museum west of Kirkwood.  They did a photo runby for the folks riding, and we were lucky to get several runbys from the yard to Kirkwood station.  Nice way to end it before heading home to Ohio.

Needless to say, I sorely miss making the old gal strut her stuff.  She surprised a lot of people by being a whole lot stronger than they thought.  My first time running on the mainline was the convention trip from Newburg east.  Looking back at old Emp TT, she was over her tonnage limit, but didn't miss a step going up the hill.  I was proud of her (and relieved that I lost my "virginity" by not making a fool of myself or the engine).  She was quite the lady.
