Steam & Excursion > Black Hills survivors. 1964 and 1966

The Black Hills Central was the first tourist railroad that I knew about. Our family vacationed in the Black Hills first in 1964 then in 1966.
My Dad knew his teenage boys loved trains and wangled a cabride from Oblivion to Hill City on #69, Klondike Casey. My first steam cab ride.  First Diesel cab ride  was a CNW Baldwin in Council Bluffs.
It was interesting to see what was collected at Hill City, but, now, 50 plus years later to see what survived.
and Now from the 620 Negative size Sears BOX camera (motto: your negatives come pre-scratched right from the camera) are photos from Hill City South Dakota.
1. 1964 Heisler #3  now at the Oregon Coast Scenic RR
2. Shay #7 Now at Hesston
3.  KL&L # 5 Now J. Niels Lumber at IRM

4.1964  Here is a shot of the front of Shay 7 with a CBQ SD9 peeking around. Probably came down from Deadwood. I am not sure when the CBQ  local stopped running to Keystone.
5. 1964 another shot of Shay 5 with Dad's 1960 torquise Chevy to the right. Try doing a 500 mile trip with the windows down in July and 5 people in there.
6  1964 the "other" side of #7

7.  1966 Chief Crazy Horse.  2-6-0 was that somebody's #9?
8.  1966 CNW 4-6-0 444   at the Forney Museum
9.  1966  Duluth and Northeastern 14   now Fillmore and Western.

10.  1966 #69 off to the side.
11.  1966 #7 is running the excursions.
12.  1966 Anybody know anything about this 0-4-0T ? was it a saddletanker?

I was about 14 in 1964, and remember my first ride on "The 1880 Train", but not sure what engine they were using. And, I was there Yesterday too !

I am the same age. I think in 1964 standard gauge trains with #7 went all the way to Keystone.
The narrow gauge only went as far as Oblivion and that is where the 69 turned on the wye and came back to Hill City.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the attached 2 photos are of the same operation.
I was on my way to geology field camp in Wyoming in the summer of 1967 and on the way, I took these.
I was a kid...little did I know that MANY years later these might be of interest to somebody.

These are awesome.  Did you happen to take one of 104?  It appears to still have its Peninsula Terminal lettering in the shot, but the steam dome cover is off which makes me think it's being prepared for service.  

Zoohogger, those photos of Shay 5 at Hill City are SUPER RARE.  I've only seen one other photo of it there!  Elliott Donnelley owned it, was going to use it at Hill City, but ended up getting into a spat with Bill Heckman (owner of the BHC) and moved it to North Freedom and then to IRM.  

Nice to see #7 before that diamond stack Hollywood put on her.

My uncle worked for RR Donnelley and knew Elliott. Uncle would go to Monticello early on and told me about a museum there. I even have an old hat from the Stet, Query and central, which,I was told, is a reference to publishing. I was never able to go with him there but have learned much more of Monticello being here on TO. (thanks Mary).
lesson for youger people, listen to your elders when they tell stories and ask questions.

The Stet & Querry equipment went to the Hesston Steam Museum in Indiana, where Shay #7 also is.

So far i have not found any of 104 with the original lettering. I found one from 1976, but it's already painted.
