We Are Fortunate That This Steam Scene Has Not Changed Much!

There are a few treasured steam railroading locations that have not changed much through the decades since steam faded from regular use.  Laws, California is one such spot.

In this 1954 photo we see Southern Pacific' narrow gauge 4-6-0 #9 has just finished taking on water before heading back to Keeler for the night.  To the left we see the turntable and down through the trees is the Laws depot.  All of these railroad items are still there today, even #9.

Just a couple of years ago the Carson & Colorado Ry group brought SP narrow gauge #18 back to Laws for a weekend of operations around the depot grounds for the enjoyment of the photographers who had gathered for that special occasion.  Scenes like we see here were duplicated nearly exactly.

In certain spots, like Laws, history really can come back to life.

There have been discussions about that, but nothing concrete at this time.

As Martin will attest, the weekend with #18 was nothing short of epic. A bit more track and the #9 running would totally
change the character of the Laws museum. We seem to be voting for excellent directors but like most museums the
issue is always one of dollars.

I could see how someone would want to model that in 1/48. But the real thing would be awesome. If I had the money, I would donate to have their loco restored to operation.

Great picture!

One of the things that has changed since this photo date, the water tower has collapsed due to age.
The replacement water tower is a smaller sized replica, not correct from a prototypical standpoint.
Many SPng fans view this as a "sore spot''.
As with many museum operations, there are trade-offs and compromises.

Well then maybe the fans who are upset can contribute some of the money needed by the museum to contruct a "correct" water tank then.

It's amazing that they done as much as they have considering that the average age of the track crew is in their
seventies. They activites outside the rail center of interest support the museum and I was hoping that the #18
event would show the potential for increased rail activity. That new level of enthusiasam would go a long way
toward attracting some younger people. Bishop is a tough area to recruit any but the retired and many of them
have left or are leaving.

Judging by the size of the original water tank compared with the size of the tender, the tank must date from the days when quite a bit of traffic ran through Laws.  Is this where they put on helpers for Montgomery Pass?

I believe that Hammil was the south end of the Montgomery Pass helper district. Helpers were added to trains headed north at this point. Hammil had a water tower. There was a turn table in the early 1900's. In later years, it was replaced with a turning wye, which lasted to abandonment.
