1. US_Durand_MI_2009-07-31_11@35_1378_SP_4449 The 4449 has picked up an Amtrak unit to ease CN's reluctance to let a steamer loose on the property without proper supervision. It's really out of the shot here ;-)

2. US_Durand_MI_2009-07-31_11@35_1379_SP_4449 There were a whole lot of people in Durand milling around waiting for a chance to see and hear SP 4449 in Michigan. Soon the engine will be back on the road headed west.

Sorry but such was NOT the case, i.e. the Amtrak unit HAD to be there in order to provide HEP for the entire train. It had NOTHING to do with the CN.

I suspect that both points hold.  Many problems are multi-factorial.

Excellent set. I was part of that crowd in Durand. I left as it was preparing to leave and shot 4449 just outside town, so these help fill in what I missed. Thanks.

Thanks, Bob, and glad I could help a bit.  As I recall, I was down by the Exchange Road crossing when she came by tooting for the crossing.

But,,,,,,,we had no "problems" enroute to Owosso and returning to Portland. Please remember that it was an "Amtrak Excursion" under their insurance umbrella, thus an Amtrak diesel was necessary for HEP. We rarely used it for power, and primarily for dynamic brake on mountain down grades.

John, thanks for posting your great photos of 4449 on her adventure.  I missed all the action after riding behind her from Portland to Minneapolis.
