Steam & Excursion > The History Of These Unique Locomotives Is Finally Being Told!Date: 10/11/20 03:24 The History Of These Unique Locomotives Is Finally Being Told! Author: LoggerHogger The book that I have been writing along with my co-authors, Steve Hauff and Dale Sanders covering the complete history of Baldwin's Logging Articulateds is finally off to the printers! This is the culmination of years of work by each of us that will result in the story of these 44 amazing locomotives finally being told.
While there were 40 of these locomotives that Baldwin built specifically for logging, there were 4 others that, while not initially intended for logging, did end up spending considerable time in logging service. For that reason we included these 4 as well in our 256-page volume. One of the most famous of the Logging Mallets is shown in this photo of Rayonier #38 at Axford Pairie on March 31, 1962 during the "Farewell to Steam" event staged by Rayonier when much of the Rayonier Steam roster was retired. This was the second such event that #38 had starred in as she had led the Sierra Railroad's "Farewell To Steam" train just 7 years earlier. I have a TRAINS Magazine feature article coming out in December, just ahead of the book hitting stores that gives an overview of these logging articulateds and the book on them that we have prepared. Our book is being published by White River Productions and is entitled; "TIMBER TITANS - Baldwin's Articulated Logging Locomotives". I hope many of you here will find it of interest. My father and I chased the 38 with Jack Holst back in the mid-1960's. Jack was driving his little Sprite and I was driving my 1947 Chevy Sedan while Dad leaned out the window and shot movies of it along Hwy 101. Those were sure fun times back then!
