Lake Superior & Ispheming 20 moving CO to Texas
Author: cozephyr

Alamosa, CO, LS&I 20 departing to new owner City of Allen, Texas.  #20 will become a static display in Texas.  #20 never operated on San Luis & Rio Grande RR.  Sister engine #18 was operated on the SLRG.  #18 is stored at SLRG's Alamosa Shop building.

This is quite a surprise.  Why on earth would the City of Allen Tx want that engine?  Is there any other infor on that?

The town wanted a steam locomotive to display.  #20 was available at a reasonable price so they bought her.  She will be cosmetially restored once she arrives at the park.

Interesting looking dome car in the third picture in this post. I've never seen one like it before. Was it a "home built" one by it's original owner?

That's one of the Southern Pacific "home rebuilt" dome cars.  Even though it is in Alamosa IIRC it did not belong to the SLRG.

It was built by the Southern Pacific Shops for use on the San Francisco Overland, the San Joaquin Daylight and the Shasta Daylight. It was not unusual for them to show up on the Coast Daylight on occasion either. SP claimed the domes built by ACF, Budd and Pullman Standard were too tall to clear the snow sheds and tunnels in the Sierra Nevada's. But there were never any problems with the California Zephyr domes clearing those same snow sheds and tunnels during the occasional detour when the Feather River flooded or with tri level auto racks either. They lasted into the Amtrak era. This same excuse was used to keep domes off the Coast Starlight also. SP finally relented with the advent of the Superliners knowing they had no choice but to run them on the Zephyr, Coast Starlight and Sunset Limited.
There were seven of these cars built. The dome you saw in the pictures of SLRG number 20 came from the Minnesota Zephyr Dinner Train and is ex SP 3604. The Panama Canal Railroad has 3603 and the Canadian Pacific has the 3605 which has been renamed Selkirk. It came from the Royal Gorge Route Railroad in Canon City, CO. The 3600 and 3601 have been scrapped and I don't know what happened to the 3602 and 3606 because the source I use for dome car information is 10 to 15 years out of date.

Web Lurker's Dome.Main still contains a wealth of useful information.  RIP, Mr. Ainsworth.

True, it does, but no one has been updating it.  I thought the site was run by Phil Dohmen.  Whatever became of him?  He and a longtime friend worked together for many years tracking domes and other passenger cars that  went to private ownership post Amtrak.

I see Steve Butler got the job of moving #20.  He was in charge of moving both 18 and 20 to Alamosa back in the winter of 2007-8.  That time #20 come into town in one piece on a flat car. Now it's going out in mulitiple pieces by truck.
