Controls for cylinder cocks

What was the control mechanism from the cab to the cylinder cocks, permitting the engineer to contorl the cylinder cocks from the cab?

In the early days, it was purely mechanical, with a rod running from the Engineer's location out to the cylinder cocks on the left & right sides.

More modern power had the choice of two different brands/types; one being steam operated, where the steam keeps the cylinder cock closed, i.e. the "normally open" type of cocks. The other brand/type were air operated, where air pressure opened the cock, i.e. the "normally closed" type of cocks.

or, it may be something as simple as a small cock with a 3-4" lever mounted near engineers right hand below cab window, or to his left near the corner of the backhead.
